Capturing the Spirit of St George
Capturing the Spirit of St George: Tony Walker Paints the Merino Motor Inn
When artists travel, they often leave with photographs. During the Balonne Shire Art Paint Out 2026, acclaimed Queensland artist Tony Walker left St George with something more lasting — a beautifully observed watercolour sketch of the Merino Motor Inn, commissioned by owners Jono and Tam.
The Balonne Shire Art Paint Out brought artists from across Queensland together to celebrate the landscapes, streetscapes and community life of the region. Hosted along the banks of the Balonne River, the event encouraged artists to immerse themselves in the character of St George and capture the unique stories of the town through their work.
An Artist Known for Place and Character
Tony Walker is widely recognised for his expressive watercolours and urban sketching practice. Based in Queensland, his work focuses on capturing the mood, authenticity and personality of both landscapes and built environments. En plein air painting — creating artwork on location — is a significant part of his artistic process, allowing him to respond directly to the atmosphere and character of a place.
That approach made him the perfect artist to document a local icon such as the Merino Motor Inn.

The Merino Motor Inn Through an Artist’s Eyes
Rather than producing a formal architectural rendering, Tony’s sketch captures the warmth and personality of the property. The familiar Merino sheep, palm trees, signage and welcoming entrance are all present, while loose ink lines and soft washes of colour bring a sense of life and movement to the scene.
The artwork reflects more than just the building itself. It captures the feeling of arriving in St George — a place where country hospitality, local character and community pride are immediately apparent.
The original painting now has pride of place at the Merino Motor Inn, while prints have also been made available, allowing visitors and locals to take home a unique artistic memory of St George.
Supporting Regional Arts
The Balonne Shire Art Paint Out was created as a celebration of place, people and creativity, with support from the Queensland Government, Balonne Shire Council and the Watercolour Society of Queensland. The event welcomed artists of all experience levels and encouraged engagement between artists, residents and visitors.
Events like these not only showcase the beauty of the region but also create lasting records of local landmarks through the eyes of talented artists.
A Lasting Memory for Guests
For Jono and Tam, commissioning Tony Walker to paint the Merino Motor Inn was an opportunity to celebrate the property's place within the St George community. The resulting artwork has become a conversation piece for guests and a unique reminder of the vibrant creative energy that visited town during the Paint Out.
Whether you're an art lover, a visitor exploring the Balonne region, or a returning guest at the Merino Motor Inn, Tony Walker’s sketch offers a charming snapshot of a special moment in the history of both the motel and the community.
